Long Snapping Lessons with Weston Berg and Nick Clements

By: Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter

Sunday July 7th I met up with 2 of my students to work on their long snapping. The first lesson I held was with a new student Weston Berg of Stillwater MN. Weston attends New Life Academy in Woodbury MN where he is a tight end, linebacker, and long snapper for the team.

Weston has a tall build with long levers which is great for long snapping. With the right training I think he could be rated as a top long snapper in the country!

Today's lesson with Weston was mostly an introduction to a new style of long snapping. Weston has been snapping for a few years but was only using his arms to snap the ball. He was able to get a decent spiral with accuracy but lacked speed in his snaps.

We started the lesson with the basic warm up including a dynamic stretching/warm up session followed by release drills and some basic instruction on grip along with proper release. Weston is a very smart athlete and picked up on everything I was teaching him very quickly.

After the warm up we jumped right into leg lock. I believe leg lock is one of the most important aspects of the long snap! I know that obviously if you can't get a spiral your not going to be very good but since Weston was able to snap a spiral we jumped ahead a little. Leg lock is not an easy skill to learn, but once it is mastered it will add a significant "pop" to your snaps. We did a few drills to learn this as well as slowing it down and breaking it up into smaller sections in order to learn it.

One drill I like to do a lot is to use a band to add resistance to the slow motion aspect of learning not only leg lock but the arm motion involved.

Weston made huge improvements today which were very evident in not only his snap speed, but his snap location and spiral!!

This is Weston's snapping before we started. Not bad but needed improvement!

He used only his arms to propel the ball back to the punter which technically works I guess... but as a long snapping coach I know that every special teams coach out there wants the snap to not only be accurate, but fast as well!!

Here is Weston's snap after an hour lesson with long snapping coach Kyle Stelter. Notice his snap looks more smooth and you can really tell a difference in the speed! Targeting and snap location will come as he becomes more confident with the new form. There will also be a bigger increase in speed as he masters leg lock and his hand speed improves!!

I will be seeing Weston again very soon for consistent long snapping training to help him get to the next level.

My second lesson of the day was with Semi-pro long snapper Nick Clements. Nick plays for the Lake Superior Rage near Duluth MN. Nick and I have been working for over a year now and he has been making steady improvements every time.

The first time I saw Nick he struggled to get the ball back to the punter at 15 yards as well as was unable to snap a tight spiral. Over time he has become a very reliable long snapper at this level and is extremely accurate.

During Nick's lesson we worked on using the field goal post as a target working on hitting the pole and then working on footwork for blocking. Nick rarely missed the pole and when he did it was a great teaching moment as he was over thinking and too tense while snapping.

Long snappers should be confident yet relaxed when snapping. Ask any snapper that has ever snapped in a big game, they will tell you that there is no need to put any extra pressure on yourself. Prepare yourself during the offseason and practice so you can trust and rely on yourself during games.

If you are looking for great long snapping instruction that will not only give you the right tools physically to succeed, but the right tools mentally, then you should check out Special Teams University!

Lions Long Snapper Don Muhlbach Works With New Punter and Holder

By: Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter

Long snapping is arguably one of the toughest positions in football. Im not looking for an argument here, but not everyone can do it. As a long snapping coach I am able to work with many students, some pick the skill up quickly, but most struggle and have to work at it.

Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter Lesson with Grant Studer

By: Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter

Saturday May 25th I met up with long snapper Grant Studer of Apple Valley Minnesota at East Ridge High School in Woodbury. Grant has been a long snapping student of mine for about a year now and has made leaps in improvements since we first started working!

When Grant and I first started our long snapping lessons he was a freshman in high school and had been long snapping for a while. Grant was a self taught guy who was getting a ball to spiral but it would arch back to the punter and was inaccurate.

Long Snapper Joe Marchese Will Walk on at Maryland

By: Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter

Not all long snappers were born long snappers, or even did it as their first position in high school! Some dabbled and now either play college or make careers out the skill. I was just like Marchese, a offensive lineman with dreams of playing college football.

Long Snapping Lesson with James Ring

By: Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter

Today I met up with James Ring of The Blake High School in MN for our long snapping lesson. James has been improving on his long snapping since the first day we met. At first James had issues with flexibility which limited his ability to get into a proper long snapping stance. After weeks and weeks of flexibility training James came in today being the most flexible I have seen him yet!

We focused today's long snapping lesson on getting into a better stance, and leg lock. James is extremely close to getting perfect leg lock while long snapping however he is still getting a slight hop into his leg drive instead of locking and sliding.

Long Snapping Lesson with Jordan Winegar

By: Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter

Today I met up with Jordan Winegar and his father Nate for a long snapping lesson. Jordan has been coming to long snapping lessons for a couple months now and is steadily improving. As a long snapping coach, I know that everyone learns at a different level and that if I teach something to a student one way, it might not work as well with another student. With that said, I am constantly finding new ways to explain my long snapping drills and modify them with different students in mind.

Super Bowl Champion Long Snapper Morgan Cox; Interview with STU

By: Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter

Special Teams University was able to catch up with Super Bowl Champion long snapper Morgan Cox of the Baltimore Ravens for an interview.

Q: What is your earliest recollection of snapping a ball?

A: First time I snapped was at a rec league football practice when I was in 5th grade. First try wasn't very good but my dad had me try it again and I did better and was named the team's long snapper. From then on I just always raised my hand when my coaches asked at the beginning of the season who could long snap. I wasn't always first string.

Long Snapping Lesson with James Ring

By: Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter

March 24th 2013 I met up with James Ring for a long snapping lesson. James and I have been working for a few months now and you can tell by his long snapping that he has been working hard. If you have read previous posts on James you would know that he came to me as a beginning long snapper. We had to implement everything from the grip to the stance, to the correct motions to go through.

Special Teams University Interviews Philadelphia Eagles Long Snapper Jon Dorenbos

By: Long Snapping Coach Kyle Stelter

Recently Special Teams University was able to catch up with Philadelphia Eagles long snapper Jon Dorenbos to ask him a few questions.

Q: What is your earliest recollection of snapping a ball?

A: My high school coach, Coach Craven, told me I should snap. I messed around with it my Senior year. And I could do it.... but I definitely didn't practice it or take it serious. It got the job done.

After high school I went to a Junior College. I played OLB and some fullback. We had a unbelievable long snapper whose name was Tim Thurman, a 6'6" TE that could snap, really well.

I later added some of his snapping film to my highlighted tape and sent it to colleges. I ended up getting a full ride to University of Texas, El Paso (UTEP Miners) because of it. Being that the snapper wasn't me on the tape, That's when I started taking snapping serious.

Jason has contacted Special Teams University because he knows that we train the best. We will be scheduling virtual long snapping lessons to improve his form to avoid a situation like last year. We look forward to working with Jason and helping him improve his long snapping.

Long Snapping Lesson with Bronson Bruneau

Sunday February 3rd I met up with Bronson Bruneau a junior long snapper from Lakeville MN for our very first long snapping lesson. Bronson is 6'5" 200lbs, which is a great frame for a snapper! I wish I had those genetics!

Like any first lesson I like to warm the student up and then watch them snap for a little while I film and critique to see what we need to be working on. As Bronson started snapping at 12 yards I noticed that he puts good velocity on the ball already with very raw form.

Long Snapping Lesson with Jordan Winegar and Travis Shackleton

Sunday Jan 27th I was able to meet up with freshman long snapper from St. Croix Central High School Jordan Winegar, and Senior long snapper from Baldwin-Woodville High School Travis Shackleton.

Jordan just started attending long snapping lessons last month while Travis has been a student of Special Teams University for 4 years.

Travis was one of my very first students. When I first got started coaching long snappers, the head coach at Baldwin-Woodville High School brought me in to work with a handful of young men that he thought would be good candidates to be his long snappers.

Long Snapping at the Kicking Pow Wow

Monday January 21st I was able to team up with Husted Kicking Coach Brady Beeson to put on a kicking tournament. The idea behind this was to get guys in one place and have some fun while doing a little competition for some prizes.

Brady was able to get some high caliber kickers from the high school level all the way to the arena football level. I was able to bring in 3 of my best long snappers to snap for these guys during their competition.

Since this was just for fun I didn't do a lot of coaching, but I was able to observe some things that I will be able to apply at our next long snapping lesson with all three guys that attended.

Long Snapping Lesson with Nick Clements

Today I had a long snapping lesson with Nick Clements who just recently got back with his tryout with the Nebraska Danger, an arena football team. Nick snapped very well and we will hopefully hear back from them soon.

Nick has decided that he not only wants to give arena football a try, but he wants to try and snap at the highest level he can. Nick has a long way to go but is very determined and works hard.

My first time meeting Nick was at camp this past December. During his charting, his snaps were averaging 1 second back to the punter at 15 yards and were all over the place. Obviously this is not ideal... Over the past month Nick and I have refined his snapping through long snapping lessons and he has now brought his snap time down to .88 seconds along with boosting his accuracy.

Long Snapping Lessons with Nick Neumann and Jordan Winegar

Today I had a long snapping lesson with Jordan Winegar and Nick Neumann. Nick is from Inver Grove Heights Minnesota, Jordan is from Hammond Wisconsin, both are going to be freshman in high school.

Jordan attended long snapping camp on Dec 29th but this was my first lesson with both students. We started today very basic working on proper hand position and how to properly release the ball to get a tight spiral.

Ohio State Long Snapper Takes Long Snapping Lessons From Special Teams University

In January of 2011 I got a friend request from a long snapper at Ohio State University. This snapper was Tom Heffelfinger.

Tom is a very hard working long snapper who is undersized in stature, but not undersized in effort and ability. As soon as I accepted that request I started getting messages from him. Asking questions about long snapping, how to improve, how to become better.

Even though he was on the Ohio State football team, he was not the starter and very much wanted to get on the field. What started as tips here and there turned into full on virtual long snapping lessons.

Tom would send me film what felt like every week! Every clip of film he sent I could see how determined he was to get better. As you may know I would rather have a student that is the most determined and has a lot of heart over a student that just has raw talent. I know the long snapper with heart will work harder for what he wants.
Tom's form before we started working. The ball is beneath his head and he is really low with his hips.
Tom was obviously good enough of a long snapper to make it onto the Ohio State football team, but there were things I saw in his form that could be corrected.

Long Snapping Lesson with Nick Clements

Today was the 3rd lesson between Nick and I. Nick has a tryout with the Nebraska Danger of the IFL this Saturday and came to me to work on his short snapping on his way down there.

When I first met Nick his short snaps were fairly accurate, but they lacked speed and consistency. Today we worked on how to be more consistent, speed, accuracy, and situations. We started with the usual warm up and like always drilled tight wrists and fast hands.

We then moved into making some slight adjustments to his short snapping form. Nick was using almost 100% upper body so we talked about using the legs slightly to gain a little extra speed on the ball. This is what I do and found that it helps me when switching between the two snaps, it takes them from being two completely different forms and gives them some common ground while giving me a little extra pop with the ball.

After drilling this new form for a little while I could tell Nick's ball was coming back faster, with a tighter spiral, and more consistent!

While Nick's snaps were looking a lot better I decided to start throwing some different scenarios at him. If you are a long snapper you know that the scenario is not always the same.

Sometimes you have to rush, and sometimes you have to break your routine. While working some of these scenarios we ran into some difficulties that were used as great teaching/learning moments! We fixed things like not changing his routine when being rushed, and what to do in a loud stadium when you cannot rely on hearing a set call alone.

Special Teams University Long Snapping Lesson with Nick Clements

Today I met up with Nick Clements (former College of St.Scholastica long snapper) for our 2nd private long snapping lesson. Last week we really focused on leg drive and the proper positions to be in while long snapping.

This week we took it a little further and really fine tuned some things. The more a student progresses with their overall form the more I can pick out smaller and smaller details to focus on to help them become a great long snapper!

Long Snapping Lesson with James Ring and Nick Clements

Jan 6th 2013 was my first lesson of the new year which I have a feeling is going to be a great year for my long snapping students and myself! I have been working with James Ring for a few weeks now and he has been progressing nicely.

Nick Clements is a new student who I first worked with at our Dec 29th camp in Vadnais Heights MN. Nick is a post college long snapper who played for St. Scholastica in Duluth MN. He has had a few arena football tryouts but wants to enhance his long snapping in hopes that it will help him latch onto a team.
